  • 3.  antithesis  contrast of ideas within a sentence or phrase   (Ex: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” JFK) allusion  a reference to an historical or literary event or person that the author assumes you know
  • 4.  chiasmus   a reversal in the order of words in two otherwise parallel phrases, as in “He went to the country, to the town went she.” (considered a form of antithesis) sententia  an aphorism or maxim, a proverb, a short sentence based on a long explanation or experience
