I have never heard this phrase before, “True Human Leadership”, I accidentally found it in a book about human resources management that I have recently read in order to satisfy my never-ending desire to learn and love of knowledge in general. But this book is about a new philosophy of personnel management that I have long been thinking about; I was, therefore very happy to find others applying the same concepts and trying to share them with the business community. The book is titled “La morale aziendale” (“The ethic of Companies”) the author - Mr. Sergio Casella - is the managing director of the Italian subsidiary of a large corporation with interests in the design and construction of converting equipment for the paper industry. And this is also a nice coincidence, the discovery that the book has been collecting the experiences of a large holdings dealing with equipment for the paper industry is very welcome as our company is also operating in this same field. True Human Leadership is the fundamental principle our company has been based on, people are the most important and valuable asset, without which the company simply could not and would not exist. So you can imagine my surprise to find out that most companies worldwide are run on the basis of new concepts related to production methods, but that none of them are really considering the value of their workers who are regarded as “an evil cost”, an item on the profit & loss sheet, an expense to be reduced to the maximum extent. Most of the companies I have worked for are characterized by a quite incredible turnover of people, which leads to the following: a) the atmosphere is negative, created by underprepared managers with no core principles, more concerned about their position and Base principles True Human Leadership
  • 2. salary rather than building the optimum conditions for people to work with satisfaction in an environment supporting the exchange of new ideas and the development of human relationships; b) the company invests money in people who will not remain for long in a particular market (that of the paper industry in this case) and in which the training of employees and workers takes up a great deal of time. Today I am very happy to have set up a new company, made up of people, based on people and belonging only to people. ! The company has no top managers, middle managers, it does not have any managers at all and it is based on a horizontal structure: each professional is completely independent and responsible for her or his own job, free to make decisions and mistakes in an environment favoring new challenges. Each individual is self motivated, long and pointless meetings serving only to divide up responsibilities and reinforce the hierarchy are strictly prohibited! Fixed working hours are also not part of our principles as we are focused on results rather than on repetitive and nonsensical labour that any robot can do more efficiently. Relationships are True and Human, no titles, no formality, no dress codes, no rules that might limit the creativity of anyone. We are founded on principles of ethical professionalism where all are encouraged and expected to think for themselves. This all in a context where some countries (i.e., Italy) have approved, legitimized and favored the adoption of the so called “remote control of workers at work” through cameras and any other available technology…which is rather upsetting.   • 3. reliable business partners, who are not suppliers but part of the same reality and have the same interests: the provision of complete services to new investors who need to be continuously supported in their decisions. Long established relationships based on a handshake, no thousand page legal contracts, which are just useless and made to be breached. We have gone back to Gentlemen’s Agreements, unenforceable contracts characterized by mutual trust and respect. ! ! !
