Law

It is the responsibility of the insured to keep his policy and the SR-22 up to date. Failing that, the insurer will notify the State, and you are back to square one – a suspended driver’s license.

  • 1. The SR-22 Certificate of Insurance One of the possible penalties for multiple offense non-compliance of the Alabama Mandatory Liability Insurance Law is the suspension of your driver’s license for at least six months. This suspension puts you in the “high-risk” category with insurers and the Department of Motor Vehicles. Before you can reinstate your license, you must prove you are in compliance with Alabama’s insurance law by filing an SR-22 with the state. An SR-22, often referred to as a certificate of insurance, is not insurance, but assurance that you are carrying the Alabama state mandated car insurance and will maintain said insurance.
  • 2. Contact a state-authorized auto insurance agency to request an SR-22 filing. There is a processing fee that varies among insurers, so you might want to shop around by getting a quote from a website like QuoteShark.net. After acquiring the mandated insurance, the insurer will submit the form to the Alabama Department of Public Safety. The SR-22 must be maintained for a minimum of 36 months without interruption or additional violations but can be required for up to five years. It is the insured’s responsibility to keep his policy and the SR-22 up to date. Failing that, the insurer will notify the State, and you are back to square one – a suspended driver’s license.
