  • 2. AQI: Air Quality Index •Indicates whether pollutant levels in air may cause health concerns. •Ranges from 0 (least concern) to 500 (greatest concern) What is air pollution? The result of emission into the air of hazardous substances at a rate that exceeds the capacity of natural processes in the atmosphere to convert, deposit, or dilute them… Five major pollutants- •Carbon monoxide (CO) •Ozone (O3) •Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) •Sulfur oxides (SOx) •PM2.5 and PM10 Factors that affect air pollution:- •Emissions (traffic, industrial, domestic) •Geography (terrain) •Weather conditions (rain, winds, humidity) •Season •Time of day •Population density •Indoor vs outdoor SMOG Combination of gases with water vapor and dust. Combination of words smoke and fog. Forms when heat and sunlight react gases (photochemical smog) Occurs often with heavy traffic, high temperatures, and calm winds
  • 3. SMOG Carbon Monoxide Sulfur Dioxide Nitrogen Dioxide Particulate Matter Ground Level Ozone Its effect •Limits visibility •Decreases UV radiation •Yellow/black color over cities •Causes respiratory problems and bronchial related deaths
  • 4. Air Quality Air Quality Index Protect Your Health Good 0-50 No health impacts are expected when air quality is in this range. Moderate 51-100 Unusually sensitive people should consider limiting prolonged outdoor exertion. Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups 101-150 Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. Unhealthy 151-200 Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion, everyone else, especially children should limit prolonged outdoor excertion. Very Unhealthy (Alert) 201-300 Active children and adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion everyone else, especially children, should limit outdoor exertion.

Outdoorair pollution Combustion(Tobacco, Power plants, Incinerators, Automobiles, Industry) Diesel pollutants(Particulate matter , Gases -NOx, CO, Sox, VOCs -formaldehyde, acrolein, aldehydes) Indoorpollutants Non-specific symptoms Household vs work space Sick building syndrome (20% exposed)- Cigarette smoke, combustion products, Organic offgasing (glue, fabrics, furnishings) Biological agents (infections, allergens), Additional factors (stress, fatigue, diet, alcohol)
